Considering the balance between personal morals and societal norms, how do you envision the
evolution of a society's rules and the individual's role in shaping them?
The evolution of a society only occurs because of individuals strong enough and daring enough to
stand up for their own personal morals. I'm not entirely sure there's a universal morality,
although there do seem to be certain rules written into the universe that if we choose to follow
them we create better functioning societies. I think it's important for those individuals that
are able to think deeply about what types of societies they want to live in and to think about
what types of norms would enable the most people that want to flourish to have the means to
flourish. Not a utopian society in which everyone is great, but a society the creates the
conditions that those willing to work for their own freedoms and happiness have the greatest
opportunity to do that. It's the thoughtful individuals that march to the beat of their own drum
that are able to think most deeply about what that sort of society would look like and to model
a better way of living based on a superior moral standard.
